Jasmin Young and Chantal Umpelby are summer-loving, 22-year old Gold Coast girls who spend their evenings indulging their second passion.

Both work full time – Chantal in hospitality and Jasmin in communications. Yet, as the sun sets on the Gold Coast hinterland, Chantal and Jasmin retreat to their office at Jasmin’s home in Upper Coomera to begin work on another enterprise. The pair work from 4pm until late, or often into the early hours of the morning, building their new bikini label, Summer Addiction, from the ground up.

The duo launched their luxury swimwear line in December 2016. The Gold Coast entrepreneurs are sure to make waves with their label, having created Summer Addiction in response to a strong demand for high-end, Brazilian cut swimwear. “Not many companies have our unique fusion of European style and cheeky Brazilian cut. There are companies that specialise in a luxurious style but they have fuller briefs and a more covered bust. There are also bikinis with cheeky cuts, but they have loud prints. We saw a demand in the market to fuse these styles together,” Chantal said.

On launching their debut White Label collection just two months ago, the self-funded pair received a warm welcome to the $AUD 23 billion bikini industry, through online sales. “In just one week we sold almost 30 per cent of our first collection, and in one month we have sold almost 50 per cent,” Jasmin said in January. “We’ve been overwhelmed with support from girls on the Gold Coast, across Australia as well as the UK and Europe who genuinely love our product.”

Summer Addiction’s secret weapon is its luxe triangle bikini top. “We have designed one of the most versatile bikini tops on the market that can be worn four different ways to achieve a unique summer look,” Jasmin said.

For Chantal and Jasmin, bringing Summer Addiction together has been a rollercoaster of trial and error. The self-taught duo worked tirelessly for a year and a half, designing the bikinis, shaping their brand and organising manufacturers before their launch in December.

“We did it all ourselves. From creating the website to designing the bikinis, the logo and everything in between. Neither of us have studied fashion, graphic design or business. We learn as we go; researching and perfecting our brand,” Jasmin said.

The girls describe their partnership as collaborative, hands on and complementary. “We both have strengths and weaknesses. Chantal and I work on everything collaboratively and tweak each other’s designs and business ideas – it’s become our business model. We challenge each other, but we also complement each other extremely well. That’s why this partnership works,” Jasmin said.

Chantal and Jasmin have been close friends since they met in high school nine years ago. From a young age, the pair dreamt of creating their own fashion line. “We always had a love for swimwear, but could never find the perfect bikini that was supportive, stylish and flattering in all the right places—so there began Summer Addiction Swimwear.”

The pair is currently designing their first one-piece, to be launched in the next two months. “Our goal is to continue to bring new and unique European styles to the marketplace and create a brand that we’re proud of and others can be proud of too.”
