Chef Adam Murphy has opened new Red Hill cafe Gramps, focusing on “homemade baked good and early old-flavour meals” that have been revamped for a new generation.

Returning from managing cafes in Scotland, Ireland, Iran and Sri Lanka, this is the first cafe to have Adam’s name on the lease. He has always been fond of wacky spins on cafes, having run a “canal boat cafe” where the coffee machine only operated when there were enough people sitting on the boat. The name Gramps comes from wanting to give the space a homely feel, winning a shortlist competition among Adam’s friends – the same friends who volunteered hours of their time to help fit out and renovate the cafe.

The menu is always rotating as Adam finds a balance of flavours and favourites, but each menu strives to bring together quality ingredients prepared on-site, designing food that is inherently simple yet humbly complex. Gramps’ eggs are free range, with meat sourced from Billy’s in neighbouring Ashgrove. Diners can expect dishes like Toast & Poach (toasted with poached eggs spiced up with house herbed labne) and Grampy Eggs (similar to the latter, with butter bean hummus, nut crumble, spiced pumpkin and pickled fennel). Toasties also feature prominently on the menu, rounding out a simple yet wholesome range of dishes suited to those who prefer a smaller menu.

Drinks-wise, the tea is specialty single origin by The Steepery Tea Co and the coffee is roasted by Single O. Cold-pressed juices and smoothies will vary with the seasons, but the milkshake selection will remain traditional, encouraging scoops of extra ice cream with each shake.

Gramps Cafe is located at 110 Windsor Road in Red Hill, open 7am to 4pm weekdays, and until 2pm weekends.
