Twin Towns Clubs and Resorts has been working on a light show project to commemorate the 100th anniversary of the Armistice on 11 November 1918. Titled 100 years, 100 faces, locals and interstate families submitted a number of photos for the project, which is shared on a giant 17 metre by five metre screen on the exterior of the Twin Towns building until Sunday 18 November.
The photos tell stories of men and woman who served for the country in a variety of capacities and theatres of war. Some photos feature multiple faces, siblings who headed to war as a family, battalions and two photos of entire Light Horse Brigades. The light show will be a unique and touching experience for everyone who respects and admires the contributions and sacrifices made by so many Australians. Everyone is encouraged to take the time to see these faces and say a silent thank you to each one of them.
Tweed Heads & Coolangatta RSL Sub-Branch also invites the local community to attend its Armistice Day Commemorative service in Chris Cunningham Park on Sunday 11 November to mark the Centenary of the Armistice. Costumes and military equipment on the day will be both genuine and reproductions from the era and audio and special effects will add to the authenticity of the presentation. Following the laying of the wreaths, women dressed as nurses will present white doves to be released by the Allied and German ‘soldiers’. The soldiers will mingle with the crowd for photos before a march from Chris Cunningham Park, towards Bay Street, then along Wharf Street to the resort entrance before adjourning to Twin Towns.
Twin Towns expects a large turn out on the day to honour and remember more than 330,000 Australians who served overseas during the Great War; and more than 60,000 who never made it back to Australian shores.
