The Colonies, South by Southeast is an exhibition by Paul Ryan hosted at the Edwina Corlette Gallery. With his skills with paint, Ryan uses historical subjects to mislead his unsuspecting viewers. Using recognisable landscape, familiar figures, it can take a moment or two for the audience realise that the man who stands boldly covering half the canvas has no head, or that the woman in the frothy pink and white Scarlet O’Hara dress seems to hover somehow, strangely flat, out of place in the scene that she obscures.
