Art from the Margins (AFTM) is hosting its annual AFTM Outsider Art Awards, previously in affiliation with the Brisbane Festival, with this year’s event including a Children’s Choice Award to be announced on 30 September.
AFTM is a creative initiative by the Wesley Mission Queensland. AFTM has been instrumental in bringing artists together, and bridging the gap between artists living in isolation and the wider public community. The 2018 AFTM Outsider Art awards exhibition will be running from 27 September and 1 October, at The Old Museum in Bowen Hills.
The event is now celebrating its 11th year. The AFTM Art Award exhibition showcases hundreds of outstanding artists, achieving creatively despite living with adversity and disadvantage, either experiencing social isolation, mental-health issues, physical or intellectual disabilities, or homelessness. The exhibition is an opportunity for artists and community art groups to showcase their artwork to a wider audience.
Families and people of all ages are invited to attend and celebrate artists from the local Outsider Artist community, while also participating in the Children’s Choice Award and Animal Art Safari. Children’s Choice Award includes a worksheet for children to complete, before voting for their favourite artwork in the exhibition. Kids will also be able to create their own work at the colouring station. The Children’s Choice Award will be announced on 30 September on the AFTM social media platforms.
Finalists for the 2018 AFTM Outsider Art Awards will return to the AFTM Gallery Space at 136 Brunswick Street, Fortitude Valley for the Finalists Exhibition, running 15 October until 16 November.
