Australian-born/Buenos Aires-based composer and bandoneón soloist, Owen Salomé joins The Brisbane Tango Orchestra to tour in February.

They will perform a series of concerts across Southeast Queensland featuring world premiere music especially commissioned for the series. The bandoneón is the quintessential instrument of tango music, though rarely heard in Australia.  Since the early 20th Century, Argentine tango music and the tango have become a world music phenomenon thanks to notable musicians and composers such as Astor Piazzolla.

The Brisbane Tango Orchestra is an eight-piece ensemble which specialises in Argentinian tango music, and now is about to share a brand new and thrilling repertoire with Queensland audiences.  Chloe Ann Williamson is the musical director and double bassist for The Brisbane Tango Orchestra. Camille Barry, Eugenie Costello-Shaw and Julianna Kim play violin with Dan Curro on Cello and Chloe Ann Williamson on double bass. Cara Tran, Lucia Gonzalez and Hugo Anaya Partida play piano, flute and bass clarinet respectively.

Amongst his many accolades, Owen Salomé is one of the bandoneónists of the 16th iteration of the two-year ‘Orquesta Escuela Emilio Balcarce’ tango program in Buenos Aires: the first ever Australian to hold the position. Owen carries a unique skillset. He combines his strong background in composition with a deep understanding of tango music through his years of study in Argentina; he is also an accomplished bandoneonist. Owen has studied bandoneon and tango-music arranging/composition with Hugo Satorre, Ramiro Boero and Pablo Estigarribia.

This will be an unprecedented opportunity to hear a concert of new tango music by an Australian composer performed by a solo bandoneónist and specialist tango orchestra. This performance is presented by Red Chair with the support of the Queensland Government through Arts Queensland.
