Surfers Paradise Marriott Resort & Spa Chief Concierge Derek Fenn has received international recognition at the 25th Anniversary of the Les Clefs d’Or held in New Zealand. Originating in France, Les Clefs d’Or consists of more than 4000 invited members, across 47 countries, making it the largest concierge network worldwide. The Award for Service Excellence within the Les Clefs d’Or has been renamed the Derek Fenn Award for Service Excellence. Fenn had the privilege of presenting this inaugural award to Jan Svaty from the Bolton Hotel.
The Derek Fenn Award was created to honour the commitment shown within the industry. To receive such recognition is of the upmost respect. As a founder of the annual event 25 years ago, Fenn attended the awards representing not only Surfers Paradise Marriott, but the Gold Coast as a whole. Having over 32 years’ experience in Hotel Management services, Derek began his career at the Stamford Plaza in Auckland before moving to the Gold Coast in 2003. Prior to his eight-year dedication to the Marriott family, he worked in numerous Gold Coast five-star hotels for a number of years including QT and Palazzo Versace.
“I am very humbled to have received such an invitation and even more ecstatic that they have named the event after myself for my dedication to the industry. I enjoy immensely the challenging experiences associated with the role. I have been known to arrange such momentous occasions as surprise helicopter proposals, last minute shopping for lavish birthday presents for guests, once I even arranged baby farm animals to visit the hotel for the enjoyment of our guests’ children,” Fenn said.
Director of Rooms, Simon Grimmett said, “guests and the team alike are fortunate to have Derek as our Chief Concierge. He brings a wealth of experience and dedication to his role and leads the team by great example. Derek’s presence at the Lobby entrance provides a warm welcome and a dependable experience that makes our returning guests feel like they’re coming back home.”
