Roberto ‘Loli’ Linguanotto, the co-inventor of one of the world’s most popular desserts Tiramisu, sadly passed away on 28 July 2024. The Italian dessert tiramisu is so easy to make yet so delicious that it becomes the love of those with a sweet tooth around the world.
According to Linguanotto, he was working as a pastry chef at the restaurant Le Beccherie when the vague idea of tiramisu was born. At the request of Alba Campeol, the wife of his boss, he tried out new combinations for desserts that could be enjoyed by both adults and children. The base of tiramisu was found when he accidentally dropped mascarpone into a mixture of eggs and sugar.
Together with Alba Campeol, they created the formula for tiramisu: mascarpone, espresso, lady fingers and cocoa dust. It is the perfect balance of sweet and bitter, with a hint of creaminess.
However, Alba Campeol’s side of the story is different. She said on Le Beccherie’s website that tiramisu was inspired by a dish with zabaglione and coffee her mother-in-law made for her in 1955. She later asked Linguanotto to refine the dessert with her and they created the tiramisu we know today after 16 years of experiment.
Although the origin of tiramisu is still unclear, Linguanotto is undoubtedly the co-creator of tiramisu and his legacy will continue to live on for centuries.
