The classic sci-fi thriller Alien series is back with the new film Alien: Romulus. As an independent story, the plot is not linked with the other films of the series. It would be a good start for anyone who wants to explore the world of Alien.

What you can expect from this film are body horror, splatter/gore, claustrophobic horror, a bit of jump scares, and maybe a touch of erotic horror. The plot follows a classic three-act sequence where each act is separated by a change of location. Each act is more intense than the former one, which keeps me engaged the whole time. Logically, it is not hard for me to guess what will happen next, but it still doesn’t stop me from being frightened by certain scenes.

Although the title of the film is Alien, it is actually discussing humanity. We can see the good and bad in human nature by their reaction to dangerous circumstances. Like Prometheus, Alien: Romulus also has main characters who are not human or alien. By comparison, the question being asked is: what makes humans human?

We all know a horror movie or a thriller will end in the first act if the main characters can just make the smart choice. Sometimes it is irritating to see the characters do something that will clearly harm others and themselves, but at least the heroine of this film is smart and capable, which makes it easier for the audience to get into the story. Then again, are we even human if we make no mistake?

Alien: Romulus is now showing in the theatre. I highly recommend anyone interested to watch it on the big screen. Be prepared for a thrilling two hours with your heart beating out of your chest.
