Queenslanders are gearing up for an exciting National Science Week from 10-18 August 2024, where a myriad of events, activities, and initiatives will showcase the wonders of science and technology across the state.

With this year’s school theme, “Species Survival – More than just sustainability”, National Science Week promises to engage participants of all ages and backgrounds in exploring the marvels of scientific discovery.

National Science Week is Australia’s annual celebration of science and technology, held each August to acknowledge the contributions of Australian scientists and innovators and encourage the general public to engage with science in a fun and informative way. In Queensland, a diverse array of events is planned, ranging from interactive workshops and events to engaging talks and discussions with a twist.

Key highlights of National Science Week in Queensland 2024 include:

  • Brisbane Soapbox Science: For this event, 12 competitively selected, diverse women will step onto soapboxes and bring their science to the streets of Brisbane.
  • STEM in the Outback: It is the first launch of National Science Week Queensland in a remote outback location! Come along to experience a variety of science, technology, engineering and mathematics in action in Cloncurry.
  • Planetarium Concert: Live Music Virtual Reality Science Adventures: Cutting-edge technology meets science education as participants embark on virtual journeys through the cosmos and microscopic worlds.
  • Space Family Fun Day: This exciting event in Springfield and Toowoomba will be a day filled with interactive activities. Such as water rockets, lightning talks for children, teens and adults and a sunspot activity with solar telescopes.

Queensland Chief Scientist, Professor Kerrie Wilson says National Science Week was an important celebration within Queensland and the country.

“National Science Week provides a platform for scientists and the community to come together, fostering a deeper appreciation and understanding of the role science plays in our daily lives,” he said.

“We are excited to offer a diverse program of events across the state that cater to all ages and interests.

“I encourage Queenslanders to take advantage of the many events on offer during National Science Week. This is a fantastic opportunity to celebrate our state’s talented scientists, share knowledge, and inspire curiosity regardless of age or background,” Professor Wilson said.
