The Stanthorpe Art Prize will return this year, with the Stanthorpe Art Gallery will host the event from Saturday 16 June to Thursday 19 July. Prize winners will be announced at a gala event on opening night which will be held on Friday 15 June. Finalist Sian Eloise’s artwork Earth Soldier has been shortlisted from more than 1600 entries to be featured in the exhibition and is in the running to win one of this year’s awards.

At a young age Sian discovered her love of art and became interested in natural and sustainable fabrics which has influenced her art to be what it is today. “I took courses in sewing and got a certificate in Fashion and Textile Design. All of these interests and training have come together to produce my unique style of art practice,” she said.

Her piece Earth Soldier consists of approximately 30,000 individual hand cut fabric tiles made from 31 different fabrics including silks, linens, denim, cotton and satin. Sian said her inspiration for her piece Earth Soldier came from a day trip to Clear Mountain. “My husband and I took one of the forest walks. We were struck by the majesty of these amazing trees,” Sian said.

As well as her nomination as a finalist for this years Stanthorpe Art Prize, Sian will showcase her first solo exhibition on Wednesday 27 June at the Percolator Gallery, Paddington. The event’s opening night will be sponsored by Penley Estate Winery on Friday 29 June. Sian says she cannot wait for the exhibition to open. “I’m very excited and extremely nervous as this is my first solo exhibition. I’m really looking forward to having all of my artworks on show together. I put so much time and love into my work, I look forward to sending these special statement pieces to their forever homes. The best thing will be to hear great feedback from their new owners as they see how their new piece changes with the light of the day, and brings a talking point into their home.”
