Esteemed Brisbane-based author, journalist and storyteller Trent Dalton reignites his Love Stories concept, gathering personal moments of first or unrequited love, secret crushes, platonic partnerships and love lost through an immersive experience at the Museum of Brisbane during Brisbane Festival in September 2024.

For two months in 2021, Trent Dalton sat with strangers on a busy corner of Adelaide and Albert streets in Brisbane City with his sky-blue 1960s Olivetti typewriter, listening to their true love stories with sheer honesty and enchanting vulnerability, which flourished into the unabashedly joyous and best-selling book Love Stories.

This spring, the bestselling writer returns to King George Square and the CBD, as an Artist-in-Residence at the Museum of Brisbane. Inviting locals to ‘write their hearts out’ and contribute to an ever-evolving volume of happiness and heartbreak in an uplifting public love letter experience.

Museum of Brisbane visitors will fill the space with tender tales through their love letters, to be shared within the communal display that celebrates everything and everyone we love in the city.

To spark these heartfelt missives and messages of love, Trent will start his residency with a return to his original source of inspiration in a one-off event, mentoring a select group of emerging writers for an intensive workshop about the intimate art of the interview.

Primed with notepads, typewriters and recorders, Trent and his group of writers will take over King George Square for a free pop-up public event on Friday 6 September 2024 from 12:00–2:00pm. Locals will have the opportunity to share their love stories with Trent and his troupe of writers, the results of which can be read as part of the Write Your Heart Out display in the Museum following the event.

MoB CEO & Director Zoe Graham said the Museum was honoured to collaborate with one of Brisbane’s most cherished writers to highlight the diverse personal experiences of the local community. “We anticipate an outpouring of love stories throughout September as the community divulges their precious tales of love at the Museum and experiences the world premiere production of Love Stories at QPAC,” Ms Graham said.

It’s the perfect opportunity for Brisbane locals to share and explore their love stories with themselves, loved ones or the beautiful strangers within our city.
