Top Aussie blokes Chris Hemsworth and Hugh Jackman have been previously been spotted sporting something ‘ugly’ on Australian beaches, and now beachgoers can get in on the action with their own celeb-approved swimwear for an important cause.
This summer, Surf Life Saving Foundation (SLSF) has teamed up with Ugly Xmas Rashie (UXR) to produce a surf lifesaving-branded rashie to raise funds for volunteer lifesaver patrols and promote beach safety. An Aussie play on the seasonal ‘ugly Christmas sweater’, Ugly Xmas Rashie has gained a cult following since its fashionable debut in 2015.
SLSF raises much-needed funds for Surf Life Saving Australia to support Australia’s largest volunteer movement who patrol more than 11,500 beaches across 36,000km of coastline. This equates to a whopping 1.4 million-plus volunteer hours to facilitate an average of 10,000 rescues each year. With covetable, limited-release annual designs featuring Australian icons and sun-safe protection, this year’s SLSF | UXR collab is a brightly coloured rashie with recognisable surf safety symbols such as the red-and-yellow flags and lifesaver caps.
SLSF’s Community Fundraising Manager Kym Richardson said Christmas and hot summer days in Australia are synonymous with beach fun, and partnering with UXR was a fabulously visible way to support beach safety. “UXR has attracted a global following and with Australians and international visitors alike keen to capture a memento of their fun times on our world-famous beaches, it made sense to bring the two brands together as a key fundraising venture for surf lifesaving.”
Richardson said, “Surf lifesavers volunteer thousands of hours every season to keep watch over beachgoers and their loved ones. Our ‘swim between the flags’ safety messaging is part of the UXR surf lifesaving design, so we look forward to seeing a whole lot of ugliness in between the red and yellow flags on our beaches this summer.”
UXR Operations Lead David Graham said the brand was proud to pay tribute to the iconic surf lifesaving movement and help raise funds via the limited-edition SLSF | UXR 2020 rashie collection for adults and kids. UXR has raised more than $370,000 for community causes since its launch five years ago.
