The Brisbane International tennis final on Sunday 6 January saw Karolina Pliskova haul herself back from defeat and taking the win against Lesia Tsurenko at the Queensland Tennis Centre. The Czech Republic’s own, Karolina Pliskova fifth seed’s 4-6 7-5 6-2 victory, landed her a second Brisbane title in three years and capped a remarkable comeback, only two points from defeat.
Australia coach Rennae Stubbs, was seen supporting Pliskova by court side, it gave her the confidence to snatch 13 straight points, as Tsurenko went from serving for the championship to trailing back within a blink of an eye. “I felt there is no chance I can win this match. Of course, I tried but I felt so far away from playing good tennis tonight,” Pliskova said. “And she was so good and so solid, making a lot of pressure from her backhand on my side. But Rennae said I am absolutely sure you can win this match, which gave me some confidence and belief that I can do it.”
As for the men’s finals, Kei Nishikori from Japan takes on Russia’s Daniil Medvedev, in the final later on Sunday evening. The Japanese world No.9 won the final in a 6-4 3-6 6-2 defeat of impressive 22-year-old Daniil Medvedev in the Brisbane International finals. Nishikori’s second-seed peeled off four straight games to erase a 3-0 deficit to win the first set, ensuring missed opportunities in the second set did not hold him back as he ran clear to the end. “To win the tournament is very emotional, and I mean that’s why I’m playing for,” Nishikori said. “I was trying every final and every tournament.”
The humidity was starting to take a toll on the two tennis stars as they started slowing down, but a quick toilet break helped Nishikori reset as he built a double break, with broken serving for the title at 5-1. “I’m really happy that finally I’ve won this title, it’s been like seven or eight times at this tournament,” Nishikori said.
