As the Brisbane inner city suburb of Newstead is undergoing a large-scale transformation, Golden Pig Owner and Chef Katrina Ryan has announced the opening of her new 80-seat Pan-Asian restaurant and bar, situated within the original Golden Pig industrial warehouse site.

Drawing on her experience from working for Neil Perry and Spirit House, Katrina has combined her heritage with passion and innovation. It only made sense to utilise the existing space at night to introduce a new Asian themed restaurant and bar concept. Katrina has created a menu mostly inspired by Thai cuisine, with hints of Chinese, Vietnamese and Japanese.  The menu offers a collection of small, medium and large classic dishes, designed for sharing. Weekly visits to the local markets are the source to Katrina’s inspiration. “I think Asian cuisine and ingredients are a beautiful match with our subtropical climate.”

Signature dishes include the half Sichuan spiced duck with mandarin, miso and black vinegar and betel leaf with tea smoked Ora King salmon with fresh coconut, tamarind and grape. Chef Sarah Hockings will be heading up the kitchen team. Leading the design is building designer Mark Ryan. The fit-out has been shaped using stunning natural timbers, highlighting the natural essence of this formerly-industrialised space. The restaurant features a central open kitchen, raw concrete flooring and large scale metal framed windows. The newly-installed bar is positioned near the front entrance and provides a relaxed setting to drop in for Asian-inspired cocktails, crafted by bar manager Cameron Silk, along with a delicious small bites menu. A concise new wine list is being introduced, alongside an extensive craft beer menu.

The Cooking School will continue to operate on Sundays and Mondays, under the direction of Katrina and supported by a line-up of guest chefs. It is the sharing of skills that Katrina really enjoys. “I love it when it makes people happy!”
