Thirteen of the world’s most thrilling culinary experiences are located in Australia, according to global travel company Lonely Planet’s latest book Ultimate Eatlist.

In the much-anticipated follow-up to Lonely Planet’s Ultimate Travelist, Ultimate Eatlist travels the world with an insatiable appetite to present the definitive foodie bucket-list of the world’s top 500 food experiences – ranked. In addition to oysters in Tasmania, the 12 other Australian gastronomic encounters ranked in the book are: bush tucker in Uluru (#91), scallop pie in Tasmania (#185), Anzac biscuits (#241), mud crab fishing in Darwin (#284), Adelaide’s Central Market (#334), avocado on toast in Melbourne (#343), barramundi in the Northern Territory (#364), meat pie at the MCG (#385), Moreton Bay bugs in Brisbane (#402), wallaby tail soup at Flower Drum in Melbourne (#407), pavlova (#429) and the lamington (#475).

Lonely Planet was established in 2016 to enable travelers (both on and off the road) to discover local, authentic and delicious food and travel hotspots around the world. To correlate the top 500 best food experiences, Lonely Planet asked its food-obsessed writers, bloggers and staffers to name their favourite, most authentic gastronomic encounters. The entries were evaluated according to the taste of the dish, its cultural importance, and the special atmosphere of the location. The result is Lonely Planet’s Ultimate Eatlist, collating 500 delicious dishes around the world that will put you in thrilling touch with a place, its people and their way of life.

The top 10 food experiences in Lonely Planet’s Ultimate Eatlist are: Pintxos in San Sebastián Spain, Curry laksa in Kuala Lumpur Malaysia, Sushi in Tokyo Japan, Beef brisket in Texas USA, Som tum in Bangkok Thailand, Smørrebrød in Copenhagen Denmark, Crayfish in Kaikoura New Zealand, Bibimbap in Seoul South Korea, Pizza margherita in Naples Italy, and Dim sum in Hong Kong.
