Sunshine Coast homes are synonymous with contemporary coastal style and a true celebration of the outdoors. Nordic, driftwood and coral are key ‘go-to’ artefacts for the extremely popular Hampton Beach Style that is ubiquitous through the coastal areas. While this popular style has no sign of abating, this trend is evolving through the Sunshine Coast. Whitewash is being replaced by pops of colour, as city chic gains momentum.

Plantation Homes Studio Manager Di Gaffney says the Queensland home style transformation from coastal panache to the edgier city living, has been years in the making. “Australians are among the most well-travelled people in the world, and these overseas influences are making people braver in mixing interior styles and we are seeing bolder colour and style choices! I know of several different clients who have returned home to the Sunshine Coast after trips overseas, bringing along some fresh new ideas on design and lifestyle,” she said. “People are often working all week in the city and like to escape the hustle and bustle of the city to their holiday home on the coast, for weekends or short getaways, and they’re taking their voguish city style with them.”

But change does not have to be drastic and expensive. Although white remains the true hero of any coastal interior, reflecting sea foam and the bleached Australian sand, city elegance has a sharper look with a more neutral palette. Steer clear of whites with intense yellow or cream hues as this can create an antique feel as opposed to a fresh, edgier finish. For a modern, contemporary look, include shades of grey. Coastal colours such as blues, greys and aqua can be replaced with dark greys, natural timbers and concrete finishes.

For that ultimate city look, choose light coloured, oversized pieces before adding a touch of coastal colours to really transform the living areas into classy city abodes. “Consider incorporating block colours and geometric forms which are akin to a sleek city living,” says Di. “Get into the urban charm by showcasing your high ceilings, ample natural light, beautiful hardwood floors, polished concrete or terrazzo tiles. Try combining the cool greys with the warm whites to lift city style to another level.” Natural woven rugs, throws, cushions mixed with artefacts, wall hangings or large paintings will all add appeal and help to increase comfort while injecting understated glamour of a high-end city retreat.
