You know what – when Google “brunch” you get recipes. Recipes!! Really? The whole point of brunch is that you get to laze in bed and then someone else does the cooking, the serving AND the cleaning. Bahh to brunch recipes.

Let’s be honest Brissie’s been a bit quiet the past few weeks—so why not take a drive and make a day of brunch?

Highly recommend is The Commune Café in Burleigh Heads. Warning – while its address is Gold Coast Highway, it’s really on a slip road. Which brings me to the second warning – it doesn’t take reservations so arrive early.

Commune has outdoor and indoor seating – but even in the sprinkling rain, the canopy kept us dry.

Okay, the menu. Man, the offerings are tempting. And while they sound very healthy (maybe too healthy for a brunch?) what we had were uniformly decadent and delicious. And beautifully presented — many claim you eat with your eyes but I’m NOT one of them.

The wheatmeal pancakes are fun to look at but even better to eat. They’re light so no bloat. Served with fruit, organic coconut ice-cream, maple syrup and a smile. No wonder they’re a recommended favourite. Someone at your table has to order these but don’t let the greedy one order it.

Second was the Dragon Bowl. Dragon fruit blended with mango and coconut water so it’s basically a slushy, a healthy delicious slushy. Oh and there is muesli, seeds and fruits. It’s prettier than a picture and just as tasty. Piled high and cool – so just the thing for summer. Slow eaters’ warning – yes, it melts.

And don’t forget the fresh fruit – who could resist something that someone took so much trouble to cut and carve for you? Coconut yoghurt was creamy and sweet, truly too good to be yoghurt surely. Note the glistening honey.

But best of all was the service—the wait staff seem to think that serving us was the best thing they had to do all day.
