We spoke to Queensland Architecture Award winner, Justin Humphrey about all things architecture.

How does it feel to be Winner of the 2019 Queensland Architecture Award for Regional Project of the Year (Gold Coast Region)?

It feels fantastic. It’s great to see a residential project take the prize out and really give us a chance to highlight new ways of approaching residential design on the Gold Coast. We live in a very special part of the world and it’s important that the design of our homes responds to this and shows an understanding of site and climate. Regardless of the size of the house, it’s important that more people become aware of the real and tangible benefits of using an architect to bring qualities to your home that will truly improve your quality of life. Everyone involved in Cove House is very proud with how the project has turned out. It’s a great example of what can be achieved when everyone from the builders, architects, engineers, landscape designers to the local specialist tradespeople all work together towards a common goal.

Favourite international holiday destination and why?

New Zealand. Hands down the greatest collection of diverse and spectacular experiences to have in a country so rich in culture and so close to Australia. Epic variation in landscapes and some of the world’s finest architecture that seems to blend into it seamlessly. The Coromandel is a particular favourite.

Ultimate Australian escape and why?

Margaret River. Amazing and wild coastline with fantastic surf and even better wine.

Which do you prefer, city or country living, and why?

I actually love both. I have lived in big cities overseas and love the feeling that on any given day anything is possible. There is an electric buzz to big city living and it’s great to not have to use a car to get around. Conversely, I also love the space and detachment offered by country living. It affords the ability to relax without trying to and also a greater connection to landscape and freedom for the mind.

If you could have dinner with anyone, who would it be and what would
you serve?

Anthony Kiedis (Red Hot Chili Peppers). Lead singer of my favourite band who would have plenty of stories to tell. Also made a small appearance in one of my favourite films – Point Break. I’d cook him a steak with my signature mash and a bottle of red.

A weekend in spring is best spent?

At the beach with family and friends.
